Save the Earth Science Fair

Wilshire Park Elementary holds our annual science fair the week of April 22 to coincide with Earth Day.   This year's science fair will be on April 26, 2012 and a special viewing for family on April 25th from 5-6 p.m.  Science fair is a fantastic opportunity for students to showcase their knowledge by interacting with scientific principles in an engaging and authentic context.   By participating in the science fair students can:

  • Develop an awareness of the importance of science, mathematics, technology and engineering in students' lives.
  • Promote scientific inquiry, knowledge and research skills
  • Motivate students to be self-directed learners through hands-on experimentation and problem-solving
  • Recognize and reward efforts made in science.

Please read the following information to help you get started with your project:

Choosing a topic: Science fair projects are to be done at home. Please help your student chose something that is age appropriate and can be done primarily on their own. Students will learn more and take added pride in their project if they complete it on their own.
Guidebook: Students will use the Wilshire Park Science Fair Guidebook to assist them with their projects. The guidebook utilizes the scientific method for investigation and includes suggestions and instructions for their projects. Students will be expected to use the scientific method to perform investigations and record their findings or the engineering design process to invent something.
Guidelines for the Display: To communicate results effectively, please make sure the project is on standard, three-panel display board that unfolds to be 36" tall by 48" wide. They can be purchased at any office supply store or art supply store.  The display should include photos and captions of the project show each step of the investigation.  Please write your name and teacher's name on the back of the display board.
Safety: The project should follow basic science safety standards. Live animals and sharp/dangerous objects may not be displayed. If you display something of value, please stand by your project during the science fair. The school will not be responsible for lost, stolen or broken items. Please make sure that your name, teacher's name and grade are clearly written on the front side of your project/display board.

Questions: If you have any questions, or are interested in volunteering to help with this year's Science Fair, please leave
