Orchestra

Students in grades 3 - 5 are invited to enroll in orchestra classes.  Beginners learn fundamentals of music literacy and basic techniques on instruments. Experienced players are grouped by instrument families and learn to play together in ensemble. Students make connections with mathematics, science and language arts. Orchestra students encounter folk musics from many cultures as well as art music from the Baroque to modern times. They work from published method books designed for instrumental music classes and experienced musicians begin to play from orchestral parts. Students may select from violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone and percussion.

Students may borrow District instruments and school-owned instruments, or provide their own. Successful students develop attention and self discipline, as they practice their instruments at home every day. Enrollment is expected to continue for the entire school year.

Highlights of each year are a trip to The Colburn School to hear the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and inclusion in an Invitational Play Day for high achieving students from several schools to meet and play together at Wilshire Park.

Orchestra and Chorus (instrumental and general music) are part of the comprehensive arts instruction provided by the Arts Education Branch of LAUSD. All teachers in the AEB are fully credentialed highly qualified teachers in their art form.
